This reminds me of a drama I watched recently, Akihabara@DEEP. Was a guy in it who made himself a Gundam suit. It was highly amusing. And strangely enough, fit in quite well with the story. (given he was pretty much an eccentric super rich otaku.) I very strongly recommend the show for people who like Japanese live action.
The way I would label it, is Genshiken meets The Goodies. (if anybody is old enough to remember them...) really quite strange, but very good.
