I'm not sure if it's totally fair to compare the two, but I'm basically with this.
And to the original question asker, don't forget that Angel Beats isn't just a 13 ep anime, it's also two manga and a light novel. Unlike usual, each isn't just another person's interpretation of one main source; the anime, manga, and novels all complement each other, and Maeda says the best way to get the most out of Angel Beats is to indulge in all three media branches. As a multimedia project, they're doing a little bit of everything, not mastering at everything. You either master one thing, or just be pretty good at a lot of things. Angel Beats is just dipping toes into many forms of storytelling.
