I'm still on the fence about this issue I definitely agree that pre-timeskip Naruto wasn't chuunin material, but..

I definitely agree that pre-timeskip Naruto wasn't chuunin material, but he has trained with a Sannin for nearly 2.5 years and that should count for something. Naruto has shown that if he just clears his head he is capable of forming strategies which utilize teamates. Case in point when came up with a very impressive strategy that he and Sasuke used to free Kakashi when they fought Zabuza. More recently, he came up with a strategy with Sakura to pass the bell test (which was far less impressive but nonetheless clever). We haven't seen him in a post-timeskip battle where his emotions concerning Sasuke or Gaara haven't been involved. I think he'll perform better when he gets in a battle where a friend's life isn't immediately at stake.

Plus Chouji's a chuunin and pre-timeskip he was shown to be nearly as dumb and skilless as Naruto (if not more so). So I say Naruto might be worthy.
