Logically, you're right.
But I think that Okarin is understandably operating under very intense emotions here, and the prevailing thought for him is "I must keep Mayuri under my constant and immediate supervision! I have to be there to keep her safe!".
When someone you love is in danger, it can be
very hard to accept (or even consider) that the best course of action is to split up from that person.
