To be fair, they really
aren't important plot-wise, both in the anime or the game. They're there simply to make it look like an actual army is fighting against the Empire, and not just four or so main characters who in truth are the only ones who have been shown doing anything. That, and they put them in there for the fans of the game.
I don't know if Tyrone has played the game or not, but I can understand that the characters look weak from an anime only perspective. They probably really won't get many lines or attention throughout the anime, apart from episodes like these to be honest.
