Why did Klan and Sheryl say that anyway?

I hope that there is another implication to what Kuran wants to express to whatever Alto says and not what i have thought it is... if not, this is toooooo saddening.....

but with all the "protecting Ranka" flashbacks, i do not have a good feeling about the ending... at least for today.
