I wouldn't call them noise, Noise-Rock would be appropriate I guess. But they're certainly awesome, especially Boredoms.
And thanks for the suggestion on the movie, it definitely sounds interesting, I'll have a look.
edit: Having listened to a bit more of his work now, I have to say I'm surprised at the diversity of Merzbow's discography. There's stuff that's more free noise-jazz than just noise, songs with an appeal similar to minimal-musicians like Steve Reich or Terry Riley, beat-heavy stuff, dark ambient, etc, etc...
