In the film, Hackman's character is recording a conversation between a man and a woman for a businessman where he overhears them saying "He'd kill us if he got the chance." This makes him feel intense guilt and concern over what to do, fearing for the life of the couple.
At the end of the film, the businessman is murdered, and Hackman's character realizes that the man and woman were responsible; their conversation actually was "he'd kill
us
if he got the chance." It's a change in emphasis that is nevertheless important, but since we're in text in Umineko, we don't have that advantage.
Wait, what? I don't quite get the difference here.
