Spoiler
for
episode 5

After all these episodes of Artesia hunting for Alice (dead or alive) we suddently discover that Alice is Ateria's daughter and so Ateria no longer wants to kill or capture her. Suddenly everything is okay. More than that, Alice is a witch, not a human like she has been claiming. There goes the whole theme of "magic can be done by anyone with a heart that believes."
The show just turned topsy-turvey on us. And I'm not convinced that it isn't going to turn topsy-turvey again.
Are you sure about that? Unless I missed something:
Spoiler
:
Of course Ateria was in love with Alice's father, but that doesn't mean that she was Alice's mother.
And Ateria wasn't trying to kill or capture Alice before; she was just trying to get the book, presumably because she knew that That Man stole it and thinks that it might lead her to him. She explictly told her hunters not to hurt Alice when sending them to take the book away from her.
It's reasonable to think that Ateria would want to protect Alice even though--well, more
because
--she was the daughter of the man she loves by another woman; that would certinally explain her odd reactions. She might even see something of That Man in Alice.
