I don't really think I ever had any actual gateway, so to speak. I watched some amount of subpar Asian dubs of anime in my early childhood, although I can't remember what my interest level was.

I don't think those really count as anime, since outsourcing animation to other countries happens a lot. People still consider The Simpsons an American series despite a lot of animation being done in Korea.
