It's really not to surprising. Considering the progression from Assassins Creed I to II.
Assassins Creed>>>>Assassins Creed 2>>>>Assassins Creed 3
Medieval Period>>>>Renaissance period>>>>Age of Sail/Napoleon/American/Frenchrevolutions
It's in the same general time progression period.
Now they COULD have started with the French Revolution...but if you're making other games with the AC3 character, it's a bit of a waste since if you start with American Revolution you can progress to the French.
I AM a bit worried about them trying to advance to periods beyond the general time frame in Asassins Creed 3 though. Cause honestly? The hand to hand combat focus in Assassins Creed games starts to get broken when people start sporting multi shot firearms.
