Given his relationship with said masked twins? Not quite. You see, what little of his character that was developed ties him with the twins rather intricately.
A familiar is kind of a life-and-death bargain.
But yes, his "role" was to be the driving force behind all the events that occurred. That much is true. And in that role, he is essential. Without him filling that role, the story has to be rewritten.
