Normally I'd agree, but then again this is the world of fiction.
And that still doesn't explain how this is coming off as a typical anime high school romance/comedy/drama with some war themes thrown in.

I did say the anime went overboard with the emo, but Welkin shrugging it of like he did in the game felt far more unnatural to me. The least they could have done was give him a coming-to-terms scene like the Bruhl scene in the anime, something that really made it hit home that Welkin has lost his sister. Not a squad mate, but his sister.
