It's because of the engine they used to make this game, it cannot handle that fast paced gameplay.

DMC4 when released you just need to finish the game in normal to unlock it now it's timed patch lock. As for skins and costumes DMC3 had all previous DMC and even more costumes for free which are unlockable and the special edition featured Vergil as a playable character.
