If I remember correctly, Michael never found out what Luca was being summoned for nor asked. But he did just brush it aside and tell Luca not to keep things to himself again (via 19's insert). So I think that really there are still secrets between friends here. Sadly, had Michael survived, I'm sure that would've mellowed over had they discussed it.
The movie made up for this as Michael kept an eye on Luca and also the communication appeared to be better, given that Michael knew Mishima would try to murder Luca.

Hey, he did visit her and spend some time. It's not as if he didn't have other things to do and she was well well taken care of in the hospital.

But it was much later (as in a week or so after she was injured). That is what I'm pointing out. Usually, friends and family visit quickly after the patient is diagnosed. Instead, he was seen wallowing over Michael and then just being in his room. Until Ranka called, he didn't approach anyone, not even Sheryl, which I found was odd.

I am aware of the conspirators in the series... however, Grace was their "face" and she was awesome that way.

I guess I always believed that they were in another ship somewhere in the Galaxy and Grace was their communicator. Whether or not that is a theory or holds water, neither series, manga, nor novel justifies either piece.

That Leon was such a sucky villain is what makes his weak perfomance so enjoyable to watch... in comparison to Grace, you can see where his strings are getting pulled all the time. That is what makes taking Grace out of the villain picture such a bad idea in the movie, IMHO.

I know what you mean. Even in the series, I laughed when he tried to sound evil. I almost wanted to compare him to DBZ villains, which were just ridiculous.
But I still think that I liked Grace in both lights, so if I had to choose, I'd ask for a new villain but one that portrayed his or herself as a villain. Had they inserted a new character, a new villain, then it would've been better.
I just really hated that he only got a few minutes of being a good guy.
Despite that I don't like him with Ranka in a romantic way, I still like him as a character. And so, to see him pushed out like that made me sad.

The whole thing about stories is that a good writers will try to give you the plot critical information explicitly and stuff that could be inferred they try to point out via little hints. If they leave things out completely, it is most reasonable to assume that they didn't happen.
And even with the errors and missteps the writers had in the series, they are very good at their job and at adding those little hints of information if the viewer is supposed to assume something happened.
|
Except, when they address things in stories later, you have to question why they didn't address it sooner since it would be logical. First thing that comes to mind with me if I'd been in that situation would be: bomb on bus, must stay above 50mph, but what about the gas? What if we run out? How do we get more?
In this movie, it wasn't assumed; it happened later. And considering they'd been driving that long without stopping for gas, there is no logical excuse for why they didn't run out of gas sooner. It's not left up to assume, it's left up to say "this isn't logical" and therefore not "realistic."

And I don't have the slightest problem with him not choosing. My admiration for his series incarnatio is not mainly for being inquisitive and having a big choice, but for taking up the banner for Frontier and his friends and for his loyalty.

I just thought I'd mention it.
I still believe his movie self was more honorable. Just note that I'm not saying that neither was honorable, just given the term "more" in one over the other.

I mostly read that as her having doubts about herself, insecurity and so on.

No; as soon as Aimo O.C. was introduced, Ranka was concerned on why her songs were being changed. When Grace was Sheryl's manager, Sheryl was allowed to write her own songs or at least keep them if written by others. But Ranka's songs were changed in this case. So I'm sure she was rather suspicious if she'd communicated to know about Sheryl writing her own songs. But mostly, it could be why
that significant song was picked to be changed.
The rest of the episode shows her having suspicions on Grace being her manager. I am inclined to say it isn't self-doubt but rather the opposite. Ranka doesn't ask Alto about those kind of things until after seeing the war for the first time in full. So up until then, she looked really upset about her songs being changed and also at Grace.

Oh, I know that this what happened in the movie. I only question how plausible that whole thing is. I'd say that the universe of the movie has much more tension between fleets than what we see in the series. While in the series people were genuinely shocked at Galaxy working against them, in the movie everybody in the higher echelon of power already assumes the worst about Galaxy. That's quite a difference in interstellar politics.

Remember when in 7, Max asked for help from the Earth government (at that time it was just U.N. Spacey), and they told him to launch nuclear missiles and buy as much time as possible; they became bait. Frontier became the same way in both universes. Whenever a colony ship is involved in a war and needs help, they've always responded by saying "buy time however possible."
So whenever a war is going on and a spy is found, they execute them without a trial because that type of thing would take time, something they don't have. And it allows them to prosecute the person within the time limits they have left, since all of them will die eventually. Remember that Sheryl was stated to have committed treason - a high crime. Therefore it puts her above trial as well. Since she was in league with Grace (even if she didn't know about it) whom committed treason by infiltrating the government and killing soldiers and officials to take control of Frontier, she was immediately jumped to execution because of the severity of the committed crimes of Grace. It isn't her fault, sadly; but still logical given the situation.
However, it is questionable how Frontier would've taken Ranka's connection to the Vajra and dealt with it. Whether or not it would be used as blackmail or she would've been executed or not will remain a mystery; but I think Kawamori would've put Ranka in Sheryl's place there. Ranka would've been locked up to be executed. That is... if we go by the movie being Kawamori's true ending.

Well, we are getting a lot into "what if" territory here. ^^

I'm just saying that your theory is a bit wrong if they had fully watched Ranka from 14 onward, especially since at that time, Grace was still sharing information with Mishima.

Same here, although I wouldn't use "selfish" to describe her.

Fine: then "human."

All characters changed between series and movie. While I liked Rankas changes, Alto and Sheryl were better, IMHO, in the series.

I still think her series persona was better compared to her movie persona. But then again, in the first movie, her series persona blended with her movie persona in the given scenes. I blame the recycled footage and the time limit to work on the movie that was to follow it. So I like both of Ranka's personalities.
However, Sheryl was better in the series. She was more "human." I don't know why but I disliked her movie personality for seeming too selfless. It just didn't seem "human."
Alto... like I've stated in the past, his movie self and his series self have good and bad things about them. However, I find his movie self more likable for his brave, heroic actions in the end and his choices overall towards the war. But I hate it for his open nature and for him welcoming in Sheryl right off the bat. His series self was very standoffish and closed off. However, he made terrible decisions in the war. But both of them had problems with demons. However, his movie self pushed it off after movie one and never rehashed it once to come to terms with it logically, instead he brushed it off and decided to act on his past self. His series self allowed the demons to fester until he logically rehashed and came to terms with it.
So you see, Alto's character in both universes had very different changes that make me question which Alto to like.
