Speaking as a male writer (although I've abandoned fanfiction due to developing an active distaste for it), I found the predominance of male main characters in my own earlier works to be annoying after a while (yeah it's an easy perspective to write: it's freaking MY perspective. Cop out!), and I abandoned it entirely to write stories with female main characters. That forced me to make perspective characters that couldn't simply be self-inserts, and I believe it was helpful in teaching me to more fully develop my characters.
If someone wishes to use fanfiction to address the concern of death in senshado matches (I wish they wouldn't do it where I'd be exposed to it, but that's my personal issue), there is no need to use a male character for that purpose. Everyone wants their character to be special, and making a player in an all-female sport a male would automatically make them stand out, that's true, but it's not necessary. An ordinary female player could be known for having done something extraordinary: having won a particularly noteworthy match under particularly adverse circumstances, for instance, or perhaps have a reputation for doing such things. Perhaps they responded quickly to a terrible accident during training or a match, something more significant than Miho's river rescue, and gained fame for saving a number of lives while still accomplishing their mission. Perhaps any number of other things. There are a number of ways a character can be made into someone special without having to violate the established rules of the setting. It may require more thought, but story would generally be considered to be better written for having put in the time and effort.
