They took that from star trek.
Glad to see they did too.
In the old star trek, the warp nacelle "ram-scoops" for hydrogen (the red tips) were grey when the engines were not in use.
Yellow when at idle.
And red when they were active.
Well...that's how they were supposed to be shown in the series, but just like the phasers and photons, the special effects staff didn't always get it right.
