Yeah... strange spot for alot of us... Some folk were discussing the phenomenon on the small Code Geass thread in general...

Ratings aren't great or anything, its just stuff, merchandise.. DVDs get sold still. There have been many anime that were honestly popular... but in the same sort of 1am, 2am slot... probably (though i bet i'm wrong) Trigun being one of the first popular ones. I think theres actually a wiki article on the phenomenon.

I wrote more, but I erased it cause i was going way off on a tangent. In general midnight slots are doable cause persons who wish to watch will do what they can to do so. And from this hopefully merchandise is sold. Reinforcing this is the fact that JP television very very rarely show reruns of anything. If a show and in particular a certain episode is ever shown twice its just on a different date in some other region or station within the broadcast week of the first showing. So in a sense if you miss this week's episode you really miss it. Of course I don't mention the effect of filesharing on this.

More or less I agree with Zaris... Its been so long since seeing an anime... end so well... I mean I've seen good endings to anime, but this was just so... special in a way. lol I guess game-players might feel it lacked but as an independent production itself Uta was great.
