L would have to be my number 1 favorite character in this series, the whole way he acts and thinks is pretty awesome. Others would be Ryuk, Namikawa, Aiber, Wedy, Matsuda, Mello, Near, and Aizawa...well, I mainly only found Aizawa an interesting character during volumes 10-12 of the manga...other than that he was kinda boring, with the exception of maybe volume 9 too...and to add one more favorite caracter for a top 10 character list, I would add Gevanni, the guy that worked for Near in the SPK, he probably had the most character depth in volume 11, but I liked his character. Light, Raye, Matt, Mogi, Soichuro, and Shimura would be other faves too...but outside a top 10 list though probably.
