I believe a big strip of cloth was universally the traditional alternative to a brassiere, which "was invented by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob in 1913." (about.com) If you aren't that big, it's probably still just as comfortable. I'm guessing that today many Japanese women still use the old method, especially when they're dressing traditionally, like for martial arts.
