No. I agree with you that there are quite a few genuinely bad series out there this season, (Dekenai is one egregious offender). The Harem Hill Column from the blog Moe Sucks, in particular is doing a good job of lampooning that sorry lot of fan-service.

But at the same time, Muv Luv Eclipse has the misfortune of going up against Rinne no Laagan (another mecha), Sword Art Online (The Block Buster anime of this season). Humanity is Declining (this season's replacement of Tsuritaima), etc, all on the same day. So this season isn't as weak as some might have argued initially. We have a Tsuritaima in Humanity is Declining. Rendezvous nicely replaces Apollon. Bimbi is this season's Nyaruko-san. Tari Tari fills up the same role Natsuro Kiseki had last season. Etc, etc. So, there is curd this season, as in every season, but there are also animes ranging from adequately good (Tari Tari) to excellent (Rendezvous and Humanity is declining), and unfortunately, Eclipse so far leans closer to the Tari Tari end of the spectrum of watchability, and suffers from poorer production values than the CGI Porn-fest that was SAO's first episode.

And certainly, there has been quite a good deal of unnecessary fanservice, and rather disappointing production values for Total Eclipse. And yet, censoring? It's almost as if they are banking on the girls, not on the grimness of the setting to sell Muv Luv, even if Muv Luv is all about throwing boys and girls who could have crawled out from mangas like Danshi Nichijou or K-on, Slice of Life show like Kokoro Connect, or Natsuro Kiseki, and Harem Protagonist and Haremettes from the Harem shows airing this season, into a world rivalling Warhammer 40K in grimdarkness.

In another world, the first episode girls would not have been out of place as the cast of a Slice of Life or Rom-com show, and I think that was the whole point of the first episode. Feeding Slice of Life fodder into the BETA om-nom nom nom machine slaughter fest of the Second. basically tells you all you need to know about Muv Luv. It's hell on earth for characters who would not be out of place in another genre, set on a gentler earth. It's the feeding of the personifications of moe and harem tropes into mouths of the BETAs - the Tall Dark Bishojou Ojou begged for her death, the Meganekko who lost her boyfriend went Sayaka Crazy etc, etc . And the first two episodes basically declares this premise with a not too subtle trumpet.
