Touma was unlucky but he still had a loving and understanding family to back him through the hard times. Also his power isn't apparent and doesn't have the general RL utility that accelerators does.

Although it's not ok to do what he did (mass murder, though as i noted even if he killed like 10 a day it would still take him over 3 years just to get to 10000 so it's an absurdly high number they decided to go with, even then after the first hundred or so he likely would like become numb to the differences of killing), the manga is at least putting in a effort to explain why he's as messed up as he is (unlike the anime). Did the novels go into details on his past? or did they leave it unexplained as well?
