Well, it was important to Kayaba who was trying to recreate the great castle in his dreams, and whose goal was basically to make an alternate world. ALO is just an extension of the same system, so it seems to have followed many of the same design philosophies.

Of course it didn't have to be designed this way... but that seems to be the designer's preference. (You might as well tell Kayaba that his "realistic" VR concept was crap at this rate; that he lacks imagination. )
