Hayate respects Maria IMHO. He sees her as a beautiful, mature girl of his age. Of course he'd be interested in her, but liking isn't anywhere close to loving. I don't recall any important flags between them.
I wonder what role she'll play in the near future. She's still enveloped in mystery.
If Hayate tried courting her it'd be ok if Maria allowed it if Nagi found them out. If she told her that it makes her happy then it wouldn't matter all that much. Nagi can't really go against Maria's wishes. She's too important to her. But on the other hand, it'd really hurt Nagi...
Anyway, there are dialects everywhere. Don't ask why. People and languages just like to mix. It's like that where I live as well. If I'd go to the other side of the country, I'd hear something completely uncompromisable, like some weird chanting... AH, THEY'RE TRYING TO CURSE ME WITH THEIR CRAZY LANGUAGE!! *runs away*
