Well, this is certainly a way to claim "victory". ^^
From what I saw, the writers were telling us in the movie that, even with Ranka and Sheryl changing their position, Sheryl would still win, because Alto genuinely loved her in a romantic way.
But if you never accepted that conclusion ( TV Alto romantically loves Sheryl over Ranka) in the first place, I guess that would skew your perspective on the issue.
