I think these are the types of things that make anime somewhat taboo. A few people make themselves out to be idiots because of their unbridled obsessions and then the stereotype is placed over the rest of the, dare I say it, 'normal' anime viewers.
Granted these stereotypes are being broken down slowly but surely with the increased exposure anime has been having in the Western world, but I think it'll still take
quite some time until anime is really accepted in the main stream culture (if it ever truly happens at all).
