From the anime it looks like they form connection between the battery on his neck and the area behind his ears.
It was mentioned in LN1 that espers (during the curriculum) have their brain pierced right behind the ears, so maybe the holes were still there...
If you disconnect it, then probably the same would happen as if the battery run out.
