The anime is going through the introductory stages. It's most likely they haven't introduced the mystery mage you are talking about because anime writers felt like it didn't make sense to make such a big deal about him when he's not really in the guild.

Spoiler for The Mystery Man: The printed page is different from TV. The show has yet to fully introduce important aspects of the Fairy Tail universe. Making a big deal out the "Mystery Man" would be a distraction when we don't really need to know about him at the moment when the show's makers have barely gotten into the backstories of two main characters and have barely introduced Gajeel and the revelation that the dragons may have all disappeared at once.. They can easily explain the lack of references to him as a powerful member of Fairy Tail since he's not really a working mage. He left Fairy Tail for a personal quest that has taken a years.
