Because they won't make it back to earth on impulse power, it'll run out halfway. The BETA homeworld has a hyperspace node linking the entire quadrant together, and is nearer. And the Defiant might even be able to hijack it to get back to Earth.
So, its a crazy scheme with a 98.47% chance of failure. But its the one shot they have to save Humanity, so might as well take the highway to hell.
