Nowadays, not necessarily. "Protestant" is merely a word. Surprisingly enuf, there r certain denominations or individuals( like kathryn kuhlman) even under protestantism that believe in this so called "brotherhood" that all that matters is that u believe in God. Then ur free to believe in anything els like St. Mary, etc and it wud b alright. In my point of view(i am not dictating how others shud view this, ur entitled to ur own opinion), pipol giv in to this illusion that its alright which is where some protestants stand. Dont get me wrong tho. Im not trying to lead a crusade.
