Agree, the male presence really gives a reason for the ecchi to exist. Boobs being fondled by other chicks just to be fondled for no purposed.....just feels pretty meh to me. Its also probably feeling empty since the comedy isn't here. One way to really sell ecchi is to involve it in a comedy routine, to sell the light-heartness of it while keeping the sex appeal.
Compared to boobs being moved and having some kind of effect with the love interest. Plus it makes the "male insertion" card easier to use, because you can just imagine yourself as the main character.
Personally for me, I enjoy watching how the MC handles his new harem situation, and wonder if he will except or act like a wuss....Most fail but you do have a few who go hard and pick the harem option.
I could care less about two hot chicks acting lewd on each other while I watch, I'm trying to imagine two hot chicks acting lewd on me. The male character makes that easier to imagine.
