Well, it's not completely pointless, but it does help to do a middle translation too. The best Learning Japanese book I've read did this and it really helped:
"Kore wa juu desu ka?"
"This (subj.) gun is (qstn)?"
"Is this a gun?"
It's a good tool for memorizing the particles like "no" and "o" and such. If all the subtitled anime that I've watched did that I'd be able to speak Japanese by now. ^_^ Sheesh, I've watched over 700 of them so far and all I know are mostly single words and short phrases.
