Just watched it.

This little episode really helps paint the picture of some long term test project conspiracy. Combined with Himatsubushi-hen and the first arc of Kai and other random tidbits from other arcs, it's pretty obvious at this point.

As for the Onikakushi-hen "flashbacks"...

Spoiler for Why I think the flashbacks were included: Rika made the statement that there are places people shouldn't go, THEN Keiichi had the "flashback" of him killing Rena. The way this was presented suggested it was a big hint. So I wondered, where did K1 go in Onikakushi-hen that was special? The answer: The dump a.k.a. Rena's mountain of treasure. I bet that's the place that ultimately led to K1's insanity in Onikakushi-hen and that that's a "bad place" similar in the way that the quarry in Nekogoroshi-hen is a "bad place". Do note that the three people present at that scene are the three people we know ever catch the "throat scratching disease". Perhaps it's the site of some dangerous disposed chemicals or something.
