Dude, that is totally mainstream now
But honestly, if you have only watched the tv show it really may seem as some sorta awesome medieval soap-opera, it's rather slow-paced, but just enough intrigue to keep you interested. The books themselves are not really that obscene or described in great detail, they are classy. If you guys really want non family-friendly stuff, read the works of Joe Abercrombie, totally recommended, even Martin likes them!
