It was because of this, they set the time to the mid 80's when there were idols with exorbitantly high national acceptance, partially due to the lack of segmentation of the pop culture market.

I imagine you're right, but people like Amuro Namie and Ayu Hamasaki still commanded a heck of of a lot of recognition and adulation across a wide spectrum of the population when I was living in Japan.
