The "80s" character designs and modern character designs are about equal in my eyes. It's what fits the show best, and personally I think it would be great if we had a new series with chara designs reminiscent of earlier anime.
Both design styles have their strengths and weaknesses. For instance, the designs with "smaller eyes, pudgy faces, and thick hair" are incredibly expressive. Look at this vid.
