I wouldn't call it sidetracked so much as a constructive goal to follow rather then just simply "existing." Shiroe had reasoned his group had a far higher probability of success with the rescue operation but there was also the desire to do something, ANYTHING rather then just putter around Akihabara. Rescuing Seara was a more noble goal then just simply turning bandit and preying on people.
