Probably doesn't mean much, but I want to mention that Lightning has significance in various culture and their gods. The main one that comes to mind is of course, Zeus, but there also exists Thor, Perun, ect. I suppose the thing is that in ancient times, people could semi-control other elements like fire, water, earth, and wind (burn a few sticks and you make fire! dig a bit to divert the river for water! dig and make pottery from earth! use your fans to create wind! or something like that). However lightning to them was uncontrollable and unpredictable, akin to divine wrath. On top of that, it fell from the sky, which might make them believe it was the weapon of their particular sky god, which also happens to be the chief deity in many cultures.
