Additional and somewhat scary thoughts about Material Burst/Third Eye....
Spoiler for Third Eye:
Third Eye is a CAD specially built for only one purpose - to extend the range of Tatsuya's Material Burst.
The maximum range of Material Burst is actually infinite, because Tatsuya can access any Eidos fron Idea.
The problem is picking a specific target - a mass, or a fuel to turn into energy.
Because Tatsuya is a human-being, he can only target things that he can recognize.
It basically means he has to see or recignize (doesn't have to be a vision, though) the fuel he is trying to disintegrate.
This is what Third Eye does for him, providing a visual data of target/fuel so he could activate Material Burst from afar.
So Third Eye is basically a giant Search/Tracking radar for Material Burst.
However, it is possible for him to use Material Burst without Third Eye.
One way is to send the fuel he disintegrated and restored himself to the target far away.
Since he can see and recognize anything he restored himself no matter how far it is, it is possible for him to send the recreated fuel far away and activate Material Burst on it.
(This is what happened in Arc.04, where he recreated 7.62mm sniper rifle bullets and shot them at the out-of-sight target - over the horizon, - sending the fuel to it and then disintegrating it on top of target.)
It's a little scary because the fuel could be anything he restored in the novel... meaning Miyuki, Isori and Kirihara (and lots of soldiers saved by him)
(There are lots of non-living objects that he restored as well)
Well, there's no way Tatsuya would use Miyuki as a walking nuke... but the thought is really creepy.
BTW, the energy output for Material Burst is like this.
Disintegration of 1 drop of sea water (50ml) resulted in explosion equivalent to 1Kt TNT.
Disintegration of a flag hanging from a battleship (1Kg in weight) resulted in explosion equivalent to 20Mt TNT.
Average human weighs.... about how much? If we assume that Miyuki weighs 40kg, that would mean... 800Mt TNT... well, that's pretty much the end of the world.
