i don't think its awkard, just amusing i think, because it could change in a flash, and people in a developing relationship probably won't notice until someone outside of them does, and then it all goes pear shaped.

when you call a strange by kun, it is an affectionate term, from someone older to you, or to someone consider a friend.

Its like grabbing someone and start calling them "Icky" when their name is actually "nicky". same sort of situation i think.
