When young Haruhi asked Kyon what's his name, he replied a name, that name is John Smith. I'm not sure what its written in this HK version, but its probably 'yue han si mi si'. There should be a bracket after this name telling you that legend has it that John Smith was the first person who discovered America or something. Kyon used this name for the fun of it, to hide his identity.

Actually, John Smith comes from the John Smith/Pocahontas legend. It is, or at least was, a commonly used alias for, among other things, married men signing into hotels or motels with famale companions who were not their wives.
