well, I have wider pants too (no baggy pants heh... don't like them). But I choose these pants there because of the material. Jeans are very robust, they can withstand the rough stone better than other pants. Mhm... when I think about it... all my jeans are kinda tight. In europe people wear different clothes... here we have a mainstream style too, but in general I'ld say it is a mixed/vary fashion.
