For a lot of couples in Japan marriage is a big production but not so much an emotional investment. A guy I tutored there casually mentioned to me one day that he was getting married the next weekend. Just like that. I'd tutored him for 2 years and he never once mentioned that he had a girlfriend or fiance. To top it off, they were planning to live in separate cities (2 hours away by train) for at least a year after getting married. Real eye opener that one.
