As opposed to protecting themselves from the myriad amount of Marines in the bay trying to kill them? Trying for the sake of trying is a waste when there's an entire war going on.

He was significantly closer, and directly attacking Whitebeard. Oars was between Whitebeard and Kuma.

The manga looks faster because the action is packed in. It's not an instant attack.
