I think i get what you mean now. What i'm trying to say is its continuous usage rather than its origin. Just like what i'm really interested is who else is generally referred to as
sensei in Japan these days, something along the line like is a vet a
sensei? Tezuka probably won't be called a
sensei hundred years ago in Japan.
By the way, speaking of its origin, it's probably in 禮記, though don't quote me for it, but like you say, that's off topic.
