I meant in the beginning (Common Route+Most of the girl's routes) when he's mostly stoic...even when he breaks his arm and acts all happy-go-lucky he doesn't show any sign of being over-protective of the two until Rin2 and Refrain.

Well she didn't die in the bus crash (died like a year before) so there was no way of retconing that.
