Hmm, I don't recall them saying the thing about "I believe that anyone with the Fairy Tail mark can't die" in the manga, as long as the Tree is giving it's divine protection. I know it comes out as Bigelow's own opinion, but I have to wonder about that now. I figured there had to be an upside to the mark, since there is a pretty big downside (you're now extra vulnerable to losing all your magic when you join FT).
That would explain why Makarov has survived thus far, instead of dying like all signs pointed to.
