In common cases, the battery in electronic devices do
not completely drain themselves when it "runs out of juice" because the small amount of power is reserved to run a low-power function of the device even when it is off - namedly, the clock (as an example). You might be able to power it on briefly, but it won't last long. In Sagara's case he's lucky it had enough power to do what he needed to.
