It's easy to take either side, but it's not easy to look deeper when the ending doesn't satisfy you.
I will also disagree that the ending is not central to the anime. Without Akane reading the story and the ending sequence, "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien," that anime would've been a disaster for me. The ending was what gave me some sense of satisfaction about the anime, and immediately shows the friendship that was once of Haruhi and Mitsubishi. That moment made me realize the character development that has been happening throughout the anime and temporarily shoved the unfavorable ending from my mind. Without what ending, I would have never watched KgNE ever again and instead of it being #1, I would be posting on threads saying how much I hate it.

Witty.
When I said "ending", I was mostly referring to Takayuki's choice (since that's what I presumed you were referring to, since you were making a comparison to School Days), not the actual ending, persay.
Spoiler for KGNE:
Of course the actual ending was important, what with the continuation of both Akagi and Haruhi's lives and the story within the book. Akagi and Haruhi's successes in swimming and as an author, respectively, were the main conclusions of their respective stories, while Mitsubishi's was her future life with Taiyaki. The ending of the series had shown three (maybe four) different paths and storylines, while the main focus of School Days' ending wasn't so much the focus on the future and acceptance and such, moreover the two infamous yanderekkos with knives scenes and the final scene that would become confused with "Nice Boat" for all of eternity. Not really, since it's barely been half a year.
Ah, and enjoy your OVAs, Haruhi. .
I may have taken it too far, though.
