Personally speaking, I like pancakes. And I like Umi Aoki's designs, I certainly like the designs in the anime, but I think that when the magical world visuals are present, it creates a really strong contrast that the design of the characters doesn't really work with it. I mean yes, this could be just a matter of getting used to it long enough, but going from the first episode it didn't really fit with the surreal almost dystopian world.
Though personally, the mismatch between the two didn't dent my enjoyment one bit, considering everything else was great. So really, it's a minor complaint on my part.
About the possibility of this going the grimdark/fucked up road, well, Urobuchi's reputation didn't help with it, but neither did the visuals or the demonic monsters >_> I still do think this will take a dark turn, if only due to what Homura told Madoka (and her general mannerism before that speech, especially the biting of the lips)
